Meet Our Team: Filipa C. Sousa

Being supportive, respectful, and responsible toward our team is part of our mission.

This month our Platform Development Director, Filipa Sousa, celebrates 1 year at Stemmatters.

Filipa holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Porto and has worked as an R&D scientist for over 17 years. While studying the interplay between bioinspired biomaterials and cells and focusing on developing 3D microenvironments for Regenerative Medicine strategies, she has gained a solid track record in lecturing, obtaining funds, leading research projects, and supervising teams. Filipa joined Stemmatters as an Innovation Associate, collaborating with the different departments of the company to help develop the proprietary biomaterial platform, mimsys®. She’s presently the Platform Development Director, responsible for the design of the overall platform’s strategy.

In this #OurTeam “episode” we chatted with Filipa to learn a bit more about her experience during this past year at Stemmatters.

Describe this past year at Stemmatters in one small sentence.
Working at Stemmatters has been an incredible opportunity to develop and improve the appropriate skills toolbox to thrive in Research Development and Innovation at a biotech company. Working with a fantastic team and doing meaningful work has been a pleasure.

What led you to join Stemmatters?
Transitioning from academia to an industry setup is always challenging. Stemmatters has substantial R&D investment in the main areas within my interests. Developing biomaterial-based products for cell delivery is where I can explore further my inquisitive and creative mindset. Joining Stemmaters was the best next step in my career that allowed me to level up as a professional.

What’s the best advice you can give to someone who is just starting a career in a life sciences SME?
Be ready to learn, always! No matter how old you are or how many years of expertise you have under your belt…Keep a beginner´s mind, and personal evolution and enjoyment become a given.
