RUI A. SOUSA
CEng, MBA, PhD – CEO and Chairman
Graduated in Materials Engineering, and PhD in Mechanical Engineering. Strong experience in project management, technology transfer, strategic development and global management which has been acquired in industry. Strong hands-on experience in both materials science and tissue engineering fields. Has track record as researcher, manager and entrepreneur in the RM field. Has been actively involved in research and product development, holding more than 70 publications and 12 patents and patent applications. He is Founder and CEO since 2011. Started Stemmatters and was pivotal for raising 2.2 M€ of equity from investors and 2.5 M€ of other non-dilutive funding from EU/national grants.
RUI L. REIS
CEng, MSc, PhD, DSc, Doc h.c - Board Member
Rui is a Full Professor of Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Medicine, Biomaterials and Stem Cells at University of Minho (UMinho). He is also the Director of the 3B’s Research Group – Biomaterials, Biodegradables and Biomimetics at the U. Minho in Portugal, and the Director of the PT Government Associate Laboratory ICVS/3B´s.
Rui L. Reis has been involved in biomaterials research since 1990, and later in regenerative medicine, developing since then an outstanding scientific output. As result of his professional activity, Rui has been involved by several international research projects in regenerative medicine, which contributed to be awarded several prizes, and to the publication of more than 1000 publications listed in ISI Web of Knowledge. 
VITOR DINIS
Board Member & Chief Financial Officer
Vitor is a co-founder Partner and CFO of Pathena. He serves as a Non-Executive Board Member of several of Pathena's portfolio companies. Vitor is a Director of Pathena Fund SICAR (SCA). Pathena launched a 56M€ Venture Capital Fund in May 2013. The Fund will invest in the IT domain, leveraging the experience and expertise of the General Partner.
Vitor holds a Master's Degree in Accounting and Business Management from Oporto Accounting Institute – Portugal. Vitor started his career at Arthur Andersen in 1997 in the finance, accounting, and controllerships. In 2002 he joined Deloitte as a Manager. In 2003 he assumed the position of CFO at Enabler, a 30M€ systems integrator firm focused on Oracle retail implementations. 
MIGUEL BOTTO
Board Member
Miguel has been working in the Venture Capital Industry since 1992. He has a long track record of investment selection and board membership representing VC investor , and was in charge of several reference VC and PE investments in the Portuguese market. Before that, he worked as CFO and Member of the Board in a company listed on the Lisbon Stock Exchange.
At the same time, Miguel also has academic experience, having taught first at HEC – Lausanne, ESADE in Barcelona and, later, at the University of Minho in Portugal. At present, he is Director of Portugal Ventures’ Life Sciences & Med Tech business unit.

Diogo brings more than 34 years of senior global business executive offering in the Life Sciences, Medical Devices and Diagnostics industries. Background includes President and Executive Officer of different divisions of Fortune 100 companies (Depuy Synthes, Johnson & Johnson, Depuy Orthopaedics, Smith and Nephew)) across major regions of the USA, Europe and Latin America. Proven abilities in Human Capital, Pipeline Development, Mergers and Acquisitions, Manufacturing and Regulatory.
Expertise encompasses strategy, multinational operations, global marketing, and new business development.

David A. Learmonth
BSc, PhD – CTO 
Degree in Chemistry and PhD in Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Strathclyde, Scotland. Over 20 years drug research and development/managerial experience in the pharmaceutical industry with Rhône-Poulenc, GSK and Bial, contributing to the advancement of fifteen new molecules into preclinical/clinical phases, including the EMA/FDA approved antiepileptic drug Zebinix/Aptiom and the EMA approved anti-Parkinson drug Ongentys. Author of several hundred international patents and participated in over 20 due diligence inspections before regulatory approval, resulting in out-licensing agreements in Europe, US and Japan involving upfront and milestone payments in excess of 350M€.
Cristina Correia
BSc, PhD – RDI Director
Graduated in Applied Biology and PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Minho (Portugal) in collaboration with Columbia University (USA). Holds 10 years experience in biomaterial and cell biology in the RM field in both academia and industry. Scientific management of national and European RDI projects (total budget of 2M€, 7 patent applications, 16 publications). B2C product development, business development and marketing (irisbiosciences). Ongoing preclinical development of medical device and advanced cellular therapy.
Ana M. Frias
CEng, PhD – Head of Manufacturing
Graduation in Chemical Engineering and PhD in Biotechnology from Technical University of Lisbon in collaboration with University of Nevada (USA). Expertise in adult stem cell isolation/culture in static and dynamic conditions, cell sorting, flow cytometry and animal models. Skilled in process development, technology transfer coordination and implementation of ATMP manufacturing processes according to GMP guidelines.
Cristiana Cunha
BSc, PhD – Senior Scientist
BSc in Applied Biology from the University of Minho (Portugal) and PhD in Biomedicine from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (Portugal) in cooperation with Harvard University (USA). Over nine years of international experience in tissue engineering and biomaterials research. Established and coordinated several institutional scientific collaborations, and attended the GSAS Mini-MBA Course at the Harvard Business School. Worked as a life sciences business consultant, providing strategic and actionable insights for the top tier pharmaceutical companies in topics including competitive intelligence, market access and market research.
Mariana Vallejo
BSc, MSc - Junior Research Scientist
Holds a Degree and Master degree in Biotechnology by Beira Interior University. She worked in the Tissue engineering and Biomaterials group of Health Sciences Research Center at Covilhã. She started to work for Stemmatters in 2015.
Marina Santos
BSc, PhD – Head of Quality
First degree in Applied Biology and PhD Biomedical Engineering in cooperation w/ Johannes-Gutenberg University (Germany). Over 13 years of experience in academia and biotech industry. Responsible for the preclinical development of a candidate molecule for Parkinson’s disease at the biopharmaceutical company nLife Therapeutics. Cross-functional expert in Drug Discovery, Preclinical Development and Quality Management Systems.
Luís Conceição
BSc, PhD – Quality Assurance Assistant
BSc in Biology and PhD in Plant Physiology/ Molecular Biology. MBA in Systems Management (Quality, Environment, Social Accountability and Occupational Health and Safety Management) and is a certified Lead-Auditor (ISO 19011:2011).
Elsa Moreira
BSc - Manufacturing Assistant
Elsa holds a Degree in Biochemistry by Beira Interior University and started her work with an internship in IPO Porto in immune hemotherapy lab followed an experience in London Cord Blood Bank in 2006. Expertise in processing, cryopreservation and storage of umbilical cord blood cells and adipose derived cells and acquires skills of development and implementation of new methodologies. Attending the Master in Molecular Medicine and Oncology, Porto University. 
Célia Pinto
BBM., Post-Graduate – Financial Controller and Management Assistant
Holds a Management degree by University of Minho and also post-graduates in Management Control and Performance Evaluation by Porto Business School. Célia has ten years of financial management experience in different industries. Her core competences are management and costs control, performance evaluation, cost accounting, financial management, fiscal reports and economic laws.
